György Klapka, Hero of Komárom
The Komárom fortress system, despite being under construction in 1848, was considered one of the strongest points of the 1848/49 War of Independence.
Lajos Kossuth appointed General György Klapka as commander of the Komárom fortress and the garrison in May 1849., Klapka made a successful breakthrough on 3rd August, which enabled him to recruit and increase the number of the castle’s defenders to over 20,000, and to store war material and food.
After the deposit of weapons, Klapka refused to surrender the fortress, so the Austrian command entered into negotiations, not wanting to lose Komárom, which had already cost the Austrian treasury a lot of money to build.
An agreement was reached on 27th September 1849 which, among other things, granted the castle defenders impunity and freedom of movement.
Klapka then lived abroad and returned home just after the Compromise.

His memory is commemorated in South Komárom by the name of the museum, the exhibition and the statue in front of the Brigetio Heritage Visitor Center.
